One of your AARs on the blog even has that excellent idea of the ambushers giving up on a chase at a certain time because they know the amount of gas used in the chase would outweigh any new gas gained.
I love that kind of thing, where you have to weigh the risks with the rewards, and that when you know your foe is also counting his chances, you can play those risks against him. Any fool can blow away an enemy to oblivion, but by simply adding a motive to the game, you can really get yourself sucked into the narrative.
But I think Machinas can fulfill both kinds of gamer;There are those who can use the rules along with ATH to try to survive the environment and write their story. And there are those than can go out and simply blow away the competition, turning the Machinas race into a crude destruction derby. Even still, the goal of the race will not be destruction, but finishing first. You just have to weigh how much destruction you're willing to endure to win.
