I have downloaded that old 40kish list for 5150 by Renzo. It uses Absortion Body, Shimmer and Displacer Armor and another armor type called "REF". Problem is I cannot find rules for them, so I don't know how they work. Ed allready told me that this is old school stuff no longer used. But still I am interested in this. There are lots of entries like SP where there should be an impact number. Maybe somebody remembers what that was or how it worked. the list contains lots of weapon stats that are useless if I don't find out how that armor stuff worked. Sorry for resurrecting dead mechanics and thanks in advance! :)

That's for the original 5150. There were a lot more armor types and each weapon had impact ratings for each. So REF (reflective) was good against lasers but didn't stop slugs. Displacer Armor made it harder to hit (I think).
The SP means "special". ie. REF armor being hit by a laser: Roll 1d6 (1-3) treat as a miss, (4-6) use the laser's impact vs soft body armor instead.

It gave a lot of variety (I think there around 30 alien races and 30-40 different weapons), but it was a lot to keep track of during a game.

Which ruleset would I have to look for if I wanted to re-read all that? I have a legal copy of star Army 2nd Tour. Does that qualify me to ask somebody for the really old stuff? :D

You can ask Ed, he had "The Vault" open for a while, where you could buy PDFs of older rule sets.

I just looked to see if I still had my PDF copy of 5150 Book One, the first edition 5150, but apparently I lost it. The old rules are VERY clunky compared to those in 5150 Star Army 2nd Tour and IMPOSSIBLY clunky compared to the current iteration of 5150 rules sets. The new 5150 iteration can be adapted to a 40K variant fairly easily, and run much more smoothly than the Renzo 40K variant.

Yeah, I'll second that. The added armor values added flavor (you had to decide if you wanted to arm your troops with laser rifles, flame throwers or slug throwers), but it really slowed the game down (you couldn't remember it all so had to spend time looking up stuff).

Ok... I thought 2nd Tour WAS the current iteration.

What would I need to have to play small games skirmishes with one or two squads AND a vehicle, walker, monster (bigger than average human units)? Right now I use Chain Reaction with some tweaks from 5150 2nd Tour.

2nd Tour is the current. The clunky one was the original 5150. Not really clunky, just not easy to play with lots of figures. Email me at
