Mad Max is not Car Wars

ATZ, ATH, or anything else you're using in a Horror or Post Apocalyptic setting

Mad Max is not Car Wars

Postby THW » Mon Oct 07, 2013 3:12 pm

I run into gamers that say they want car rules for ATH, "You know like Mad Max, where I can build and arm my car to blow up the other guy."

But that's flies in the face of Mad Max and Road Warrior where destroying the enemy car is the last thing you want to do . Destroy the car, no gas, and gas is king in the PA landscape.

So this begs the questions.

Car Wars or Mad Max?

Mad Max for sure.

One of your AARs on the blog even has that excellent idea of the ambushers giving up on a chase at a certain time because they know the amount of gas used in the chase would outweigh any new gas gained.
I love that kind of thing, where you have to weigh the risks with the rewards, and that when you know your foe is also counting his chances, you can play those risks against him. Any fool can blow away an enemy to oblivion, but by simply adding a motive to the game, you can really get yourself sucked into the narrative.

But I think Machinas can fulfill both kinds of gamer; There are those who can use the rules along with ATH to try to survive the environment and write their story. And there are those than can go out and simply blow away the competition, turning the Machinas race into a crude destruction derby. Even still, the goal of the race will not be destruction, but finishing first. You just have to weigh how much destruction you're willing to endure to win.

I left the same reply on the THW blog site...

MAD MAX!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"I am the Nightrider! I am the chosen one. The mighty hand of vengeance, sent down to strike the unroadworthy!"

Seriously, the main reason I am not happy with all of the other car combat systems is because they can't work for Mad Max style game. Were are the passengers jumping from car to car? Mashing windshields with chains? Playing chicken? All of the other games are basically your typical tank battles but on four wheels. Give me Mad Max!!!!

Definitely Mad Max style of play for me. 90% of my gaming will be solo play so it's about the story you can build.

I'd say Mad Max too.
I prefer character building than car building.

Ugly rumor of the month - Killer Karz may be rising from the scrap heap.

I want the car rules to be a tool, not the star of the how THW handles them.

As I said on the blog :

"Mad Max for me !!!!

I ask Ed if the rules where in the ATH's ones, but he replied to me it wasn't.

I still get the ATH rules, but really waiting for at least the machinas rules."

I plan to wait and see if anyone decides to take Saberhagen's Berserker concept to an AI driven car...
