The "F" bomb in the Maltese Falcon

It is no secret that often behind a great movie is a great book. I'm currently reading Dashiell Hammet's "The Maltese Falcon." Believe it or not the master writer drops the f-bomb in his 1929 masterpiece without using the actual "f" word. Remember that scene where Humprhey Bogart confronts the kid gunman in the hotel lobby? Here's a part that didn't make it into the movie:

“The boy spoke two words, the first a short guttural verb, the second “you.”

“People lose teeth talking like that.” Spade’s voice was still amiable though his face had become wooden. “If you want to hang around you’ll be polite.”

The boy repeated his two words.”

Great trivia, makes the book seem grittier -- if possible! I'll have to re-read it.
God made wizards, and God made muggles, but Samuel Colt made them equal!

It is a great read for anyone who hasn't read it.

All of Dashiell Hammett's stuff is great. Raymond Chandler as well. Today's writers don't seem capable of telling a story without going over the top in a gratuitous manner.
